A wide range of personal devices offers seniors ore opportunities than ever, improving their physical and mental health along the way
Elders today are healthier than ever, doing everything from Zumba and Pilates classes to 2K runs and virtually walking the 2,448-mile trek of historic Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles — all while outfitted with wearables. A plethora of personal monitoring devices now used by more than 8 million people 55 and older is taking them far and wide.
Just 40 years prior, in the prime of middle age, their parents were likely mall walking, that popular 1980s-era ritual where “old folks” donned jumpsuits and white sneakers and speedwalked the corridors of shopping malls before they opened for business.
Today, it’s less about fashion and more about science. Each step and every flutter or pound of the heart is recorded — all in the name of wellness.
And thanks to CareCommunity, a product launched in 2019 by MatrixCare, these activities and the information wearables are providing an amazing source of fun (“gamification” to some), competition and engagement. It’s so researchers and clinicians can better understand ways to keep seniors healthier longer, and perhaps offer a deeper, more meaningful view about the aging process.
